Resume:
Professor in State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology. He graduated from University of Science and Technology of China with a bachelor's degree in 2006, and received the Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011. In the same year, he joined the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since work, he has been engaged in the study of principles and methods for identifying new pollutants. The research has focused on establishing analytical methods, investigating environmental behavior, and assessing environmental effects for both unknown-structure pollutants and existing chemical substances. It leads to the first report on the environmental occurrence and adverse effects of approximately 110 emerging pollutants in 9 chemical categories, including novel brominated flame retardants, endocrine disruptors, perfluorinated compounds, and disinfection byproducts. Among these emerging pollutants, three categories (i.e., per- and polyfluorinated iodides, perfluoroalkyl silanes, analogues of benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers) are now listed in chemical management documents of the Stockholm Convention due to their significant pollutant characteristics and environmental hazards. Two chlorinated perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids have also been included in the U.S. EPA Method 537.1, Method 533, and Method 1633 for global monitoring. He is invited to serve as a member of the UNEP expert group to finalize the official document “PFAS analysis in water for the Global Monitoring Plan of the Stockholm Convention: Set-up and Guideline for Monitoring”, and is an organization committee member of the International Symposium on Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances in the Environment (FLUOROS Global).
Research Interest:
The research interests focus on prioritization of emerging organic pollutants for ecological/health risk assessment, especially the unknown compounds that have not yet been monitored in the environment. The methods primarily used are quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) modeling, mass spectrometric nontarget screening (NTS), and effect-directed analysis (EDA). Advanced approaches that hybridize these techniques have also been developed, such as the artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted mass spectrometric screening for the identification of main contributing pollutants in toxicological endpoints. Research areas include: (1) the identification of unknown pollutants, (2) occurrence and fate of contaminants of emerging concern, (3) regional ecological risk assessment, (4) Exposome and Eco-exposome studies, and (5) toxicology studies based on adverse outcome pathways. The goal is to identify the pollutants that can have significant adverse impacts on the environment and to quantify their contributions.
