Introduction

The State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology (SKLECE) was officially granted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China in 2007, and was recognized as one of the Excellent State Key Laboratories in the 2010 and in the 2015 evaluations. Major research fields of SKLECE include the analytical methods, environmental processes, toxicology and health impacts of persistent toxic substances (PTS).

SKLECE now comprises 20 research groups with 102 staff members. Among them are 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 1 of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 Member of the National Academy of Engineering, 40 professors, 11 recipients of NSFC "Distinguished Young Scholars", and 14 recipients of NSFC "Excellent Young Scientists Fund". In addition, there are approximately 430 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.

During 2015-2020, SKLECE carried out 276 research projects supported by NSFC and MOST. Over 1097 papers were published in SCI Journals including 200 papers in Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Sustainability, Nature Communications, Cell Stem Cell, Cell Research, Chemical Reviews, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials, Environmental Health Perspectives and Environmental Science &Technology. Furthermore, 17 books have been published. Some of the work won the National Natural Science Award, National Science and Technology Progress Award, and Chinese Academy of Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award.

SKLECE researchers participate actively in international scientific activities. ES&T Asian Office is located in SKLECE, headed by Prof. G. Jiang, associate editor of ES&T. Prof J. Liu is the editor of Environmental Pollutants & Bioavailability. Profs. B. Zhao, S. Zhang and G. Liu are the associate editora of Environmental Health Perspectives,Science of total Environment and Ecotoxicology Environmental Safety, respectively. Prof M. Zheng serves as the chairman of Asia-Pacific POPs monitoring organizing committee. In 2004, SKLECE initiated "International Symposium on Persistent Toxic Substances" and has organized the symposium each year since. It has become an internationally recognized and well attended symposium on PTS research. The National Environmental Chemistry Conference led by Academician Jiang Guibin has become a high-end platform for academic research exchanges and cooperation, as well as the promotion of environmental science discipline construction and talent training.
