    Introduction

    The Environmental Analysis and Toxicology research group aims to develop sample pretreatment methods, design novel analytical methods and instruments, and study the environmental process and toxicological effects of heavy metals, organometallic compounds, man-made nanomaterials, persistent organic pollutants and emerging chemicals. Below are short summarizations of some of our research. 
    1) Sample pretreatment methods and analytical instruments: Series analytical techniques have been developed by our group, including continuous flow liquid membrane extraction, nanomaterial based solid phase extraction (SPE), new coatings for solid-phase microextraction (SPME), membrane based purification of proteins, and ionic liquid based sample enrichment methods for persistent toxic substances (PTS) analysis, and these innovative methods invoked substantial follow-up studies. High-throughput mass spectrometry screening methods have been developed for the identification of trace pollutants, PFCs, and emerging chemicals based on carbon nanomaterials. A laboratory made cryogenic gas chromatography using thermoelectric modules was developed and applied for the analysis of volatile compounds in environmental samples. An Integrated Toxicity Analyzer (ITA) has been successfully constructed which combines chemical and biological analysis, providing an online high throughput platform for sample separation, fraction collection, as well as biological determination of chemical mixtures in complex environmental samples.
    2) Environmental monitoring and process: A long-term monitoring program around the Chinese Bohai Sea has been launched to assess the distribution and temporal trends of environmental pollutants such as organotin, organomercury, heavy metals, pesticides, persistent organic pollutants and emerging chemicals. Systematic studies have also been conducted in typical e-waste recycling sites including Taizhou, Zhejiang province and Guiyu, Guangdong province, and background areas in Tibet, Arctic and Antarctic to investigate the contamination status of heavy metals, PCBs, PBDEs, PFOS, etc. Differential Accumulation, exposure pathway, elimination behavior of perfluoroalkyl acid isomers in occupational workers in a manufactory in China from 2008-2014 have been studied to evaluate the potential adverse effect of PFCs to the occupational workers.
     
    3) Identification of novel Emerging pollutants: New research direction is then initiated in identifying emerging chemicals. The discovery of more than 40 such new contaminants including tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) isocyanurate, polyfluorinated iodine alkanes, and by-products of tetrabromobisphenol A demonstrates the POPs research in China is changing from following the world to pioneering.
     
    4) Ecotoxicology: A membrane based method and a two-step chromatographic method have been developed for the rapid purification and determination of vitellogenin (Vtg) in fish plasma. Masculinization phenomena in Rapana venosa was found around the Chinese Bohai Sea, which was attributed to the exposure of organotin. Using Medaka and Chinese rare minnow as fish models, the ecotoxicity of environmental pollutants was studied, such as organotin, cadmium, nanomaterials, PFOS, PFIs, etc.
